St. Mary’s conducts 2026 SBPC; Ignacian Marian CJs foster responsible journalism
Using ballpens, papers, and sharp minds, Ignacian Marians delivered stories with integrity and prudence, as they competed in the 2026 School-Based Press Conference (S.B.P.C), July 25.
With the theme “INKtention: the Depth of Every Story Grounded in Prudence,” the event aims to promote journalism that holds truth, integrity, and prudence among students of St. Mary’s.
The event started with a registration of participants followed by an opening program where the rationale of the competition and guidelines of each category were discussed, including a prayer for guidance throughout the flow of the competition.
After the opening program, a 30-minute health break was given prior to the contest proper, aiming to give each participant enough time to prepare for their desired categories.
The categories included in the competition were Editorial Writing/Pagsulat ng Editoryal, Column Writing/Pagsulat ng Kolum, News Writing/Pagsulat ng Balita, Feature Writing/Pagsulat ng Lathalain, Science and Technology Writing/Pagsulat ng Artikulong Agham at Teknolohiya, Sports Writing/Pagsulat ng Balitang Isports, Copyediting and Headline Writing/Pagwawasto ng Sipi at Pag-uulo ng Balita, Editorial Cartooning/Pagsulat ng Kartung Editoryal, and Photojournalism/Pagkuha ng Larawang Pampahayagan.
In an online interview, The Marynette’s Editor-in-Chief (E.I.C.) Ma. Flordanisa Torres highlighted that the mere existence of schools press conferences is to expose students to campus journalism and eventually immerse them to be the pillars of prudence and truth.
“Eventually, it teaches us how to love the craft of telling stories that matter,” Ms. Torres said when asked about what other values or skills does student journalism instill apart from being stewards of truth.
“Apart from that, the Ignacian Marian core values are honed within each person—teaching a campus journalist to not only be excellent in writing, but to live being of service for the greater good, and uphold faith and justice in every article,” she added.
The top three S.B.P.C. winners in each individual category will be the qualifiers for the Clustered Schools Press Conference (C.S.P.C.) to be held on August 29 for elementary level, and September 5 for secondary.
