From Waste Comes Healthy Food

Researchers from Southern Illinois University Carbondale have managed to use engineered yeast to transform parts of discarded plastic and agricultural waste into proteins, vitamins, fats, flavorings, and other materials that could one day make waste into a food source in a resource-depleted environment.

The results were presented during the “Undergraduate and Graduate Research in Biochemistry and Chemical Biology” symposium at American Chemical Society Fall 2026, held August 23-27 at McCormick Place.

Beating Counterfeit Honey with Handheld X-Rays

Researchers from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippine Nuclear Institute, U.P. Visayas, and the University of the Philippines Los Baños ‘Bee Program’ have developed a device called Handheld X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (hXRF) that uses x-rays to discern between authentic and adulterated honey (with artificial sugars such as C4, which comes from plants like sugarcane and corn that, when mixed with honey, increases the volume while making the product appear genuine).

Sa ilalim ng Karagatang Pasipiko sa tabi ng bansang Costa Rica, mga 360-529 metro na lalim, may mga kolonya ng mga dilaw na koral na natagpuan gamit ang isang Remotely Operated Vehicle o ROV na SuBastian.

Ang mga koral ay lubhang kakaiba sa mga kilalang mga kamag-anak nito dahil sa iba nitong anatomiya at henetiko na binigyan nito ng mga siyentipiko na bagong pamilya na “Laurinqueidae” at genus nito na “Larinque”.
