Chaos into Comeback: George Russell Takes Victory in Baku
Emerging from the toughest battles, close fights, and a rivalry between his teammate, George Russell has done it.
The Briton secured his 1st grand slam and 3rd grand prix of the season in Azerbaijan 2026, with Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar joining him on the podium.
Sitting in pole position, Russell was dominating the first half of the circuit that gave him the advantage of leading every lap, however the Mercedes driver was not given a race without an obstacle.
Alex Albon’s crash caused the safety car to deploy, which led to a restart. Because of the event, a domino effect of collisions had happened with Lando Norris and the two Alpine Drivers.
Amidst the chaos, George Russell managed to stay in first whilst fighting against Verstappen.
Defying all odds, the Briton bagged the win by 0.196 seconds, placing Verstappen in second and Hadjar in third, giving Red Bulls Racing a double podium.
With Russell finishing 1st, he edged 66 points closer to Antonelli’s lead in the Drivers’ Standings.
Questioned about his outstanding confidence, George Russell answered:
“I think it’s just having more experience with this sort of new driving style that I’ve adopted. Every race since the [summer] break I feel like I’ve gone from strength to strength. I feel like more myself again, so that’s really great.”
Russell also commented on this race week as “an incredible weekend” for him.
Moving forward in the season, he shared his plans—“win every race,” showing his determination and unshakable focus towards the goal.
